Salam Ramadan, the grandest event in the Sri Lankan Muslim Calendar, is set to take off in a big way this year from today (27) to 1 March.
The three-day event under the aegis of the Western Province Governor and the Colombo Municipality will be held at Green Path from 5 p.m. to midnight.
As many as 125 stalls offering a great variety of products and services will be participating, including specialised stalls offering traditional Muslim food items and arts like Henna and calligraphy, automobile firms showcasing their latest brands, and even an outreach organisation offering a free poster walkthrough, among others.
An interesting line-up of cultural events, including an Islamic choir, singing of traditional Islamic devotional songs, and dramas and other performances by schoolchildren who have come up with an interesting repertoire to keep the crowds entertained, will also take place. There will also be a special play area for little kids, with at least five different items lined up to make the best of the evenings and nights and a most memorable one for the little ones.
Although primarily a Muslim spiritual and cultural event, Salam Ramadan is expected to draw crowds from all faiths and all walks of life. Muslims are called upon to invite their friends of other faiths to join in the celebrations and share the joys of Ramadan with everybody.
All food stalls will be serving Halal meals and beverages to break fast with and for dinner or takeaway, while special arrangements have been made for the evening and night prayers, Maghrib and Isha, and for special Taraweeh prayers for both ladies and gents at the Viharamahadevi Park in the area immediately adjacent to the stalls.
