Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday welcomed the reported agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as a reminder that dialogue remains humanity’s greatest strength.

In a post on X, Premadasa said Sri Lanka understood both the cost of division and the value of reconciliation, stressing that peace was more than the absence of conflict.

“Peace is not simply the absence of war, it is the presence of hope, dignity, opportunity, and the confidence that our children will inherit a better future,” he said.

Noting that people across the world deserved lasting peace, Premadasa added: “May peace prevail.”

His remarks followed an announcement by Donald Trump that Washington had reached an agreement with Tehran, including the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports.

The reported breakthrough comes after months of heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, with the United States playing a key role in efforts to bring Tehran to the negotiating table.
