| Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa |
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday called on the Government to ensure that internal disputes do not disrupt relief efforts for communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah.
Taking to X, Premadasa stressed that relief for affected families is “far too important” to be hindered by confusion or lack of coordination.
“The Government must work closely with officers on the ground to ensure coordination and uninterrupted support. When families are still waiting, how can we allow for this confusion?” he asked, urging authorities to prioritise those still awaiting assistance.
His remarks come as several trade unions representing government officers engaged in disaster relief operations announced their decision to withdraw from relief duties and launch trade union action from yesterday.
The unions stated that more than 93 days have passed since the widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. During this period, disaster relief officers and Grama Niladharis had worked continuously day and night serving as key coordinators between the Government and affected communities.
However, they alleged that the Government has failed to adequately address unresolved issues impacting officers involved in relief operations.
Meanwhile, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake called for urgent action to accelerate relief and recovery measures.
Chairing a progress review meeting of the National Council for Disaster Management, he underscored the importance of stronger coordination among state institutions to ensure timely assistance reaches affected populations.
