Sajith to host national forum on Sri Lankan leopards today

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa will host Sri Lankan Leopard Day 2026 today at his office in Colombo 7, bringing together policymakers, scientists, conservationists, Government agencies, civil society organisations and private sector representatives to discuss measures to strengthen conservation of the endemic Sri Lankan leopard.

The forum will focus on challenges facing the species, including habitat fragmentation, snaring, poisoning, road fatalities and other forms of wildlife crime, while promoting greater collaboration on conservation policy, scientific research and public awareness.

The program will also feature the participation of students and young conservation leaders, with discussions aimed at encouraging greater engagement in wildlife conservation and biodiversity protection.

Premadasa said conserving the Sri Lankan leopard was a national responsibility that would help protect the country’s ecosystems and support broader sustainable development efforts. The event is expected to draw representatives from Government institutions, universities, research organisations, diplomatic missions, environmental groups and the corporate sector.
