Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday said that he would extend his full support to the proposed education reforms if they are implemented in a proper and effective manner.

He said a large number of children have been adversely affected by the failure to proceed with the proposed reforms at Grade 6 level, noting that expectations among students and parents had been undermined by the decision to postpone their implementation.

Premadasa rejected claims that responsibility for the suspension lay with the Opposition, stating that the current administration, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, had halted the reforms. He said hundreds of thousands of parents and students had been anticipating the introduction of the revised curriculum.

The Opposition Leader stressed that the reforms should be implemented within the current year, following consultations with education experts and the removal of inappropriate content.

He also urged the Government to engage with experienced professionals in the education sector and to adopt informed and progressive decisions, reiterating that the Opposition is willing to participate in a formal dialogue and offer its views to ensure the effective implementation of the proposed reforms.
