  • Four Sri Lankans injured are safe and recovering

The Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Ministry yesterday said that the country’s Missions in the Middle East region are closely engaged in monitoring the existing situation to facilitate Sri Lankans in those countries.

According to the Ministry, there are nearly a million Sri Lankans living and working in the region.

Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra said that the safety and well-being of Sri Lankan nationals abroad continue to be a priority of the Government.

“I spoke over the phone with three Sri Lankan nationals who were recently injured by the attacks in the Middle East. It was reassuring to hear directly from them that they are safe and recovering well,” he said. According to Hemachandra, all four Sri Lankans who were injured in the incident had been discharged from hospital.

“The contact details of the fourth individual are currently unreachable, but I am pleased to learn that he has also been safely discharged,” he said, adding that at a time of heightened tensions, Sri Lanka hopes for restraint, stability, and a peaceful resolution that safeguards civilian lives.

Last week, the Ministry had established an Emergency Response Unit (ERU) to coordinate matters related to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

The ERU will also assist non-Sri Lankan nationals in Sri Lanka, who are facing issues due to the current  situation and will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
