Main Opposition Parliamentarian S.M. Marikkar yesterday said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will invite the United National Party (UNP) and others to join what he described as the biggest May Day rally this year.

“There is a strong need for the members of the SJB and the UNP in the villages to oust the Government that has misled the people of the country. Therefore, the UNP members are also invited to participate in the SJB May Day rally,” Marikkar told journalists.

The SJB May Day rally on 1 May will be held at the P.D. Sirisena Stadium in Maligawatta. A program has been prepared from today to inform the people of the country in this regard.

The SJB MP said before coming to power, the National People's Power Force announced that it would provide relief to the people by reducing the prices of essential food items, medicines, electricity bills, fuel prices, and school equipment. However, the World Bank report states that today, one-third of the country's population has fallen below the poverty line.

“The current Government is committing fraud and corruption and is also not doing anything for the development of the country. The Government does not have the strength to implement any project properly. Therefore, citizen participation is needed against the current corrupt Government at this time. Therefore, the SJB is working to build a massive protest against the Government on May Day,” Marikkar added.
