The main Opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), and the United National Party (UNP) yesterday issued a joint statement, noting that the two parties have reached a common consensus to establish power in local councils with the support of other Opposition political parties.
The two parties held discussions on establishing power in local councils following the 2025 Local Government Elections. According to the joint statement issued by the SJB and UNP, a special discussion was held on the policies related to the matter.
The meeting, held at the Office of the Opposition Leader, was attended by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, SJB MPs Lakshman Kiriella, Mujibur Rahman, UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala, and UNP MPs Ruwan Wijewardene, Wajira Abeywardana, and Sagala Ratnayaka.
The joint statement was signed by SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara and UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala.
