The Supreme Court will today commence hearings on a series of petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Government’s controversial proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, taking the contested Bill into the next stage of judicial scrutiny following its presentation to Parliament.

The petitions, filed by several parties challenging the proposed constitutional amendment, are expected to be considered by a five-member Supreme Court bench.

The bench will be headed by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena. The other members are Supreme Court Justices Achala Wengappuli, Arjuna Obeysekera, Sampath Abeykoon and Gihan Kulatunga.

Some of the petitioners challenging the proposed 22A to extend the retirement age of higher-court judges had called for the Chief Justice to recuse himself from the case while other asked for a full-bench.
