The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday granted leave to proceed with a Fundamental Rights petition seeking an order compelling the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to produce records on an alleged unpaid electricity bill of Rs. 2.6 million linked to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s residence in Weeraketiya.
The petition states that MP Namal Rajapaksa’s wedding on 12 September 2019, and subsequent receptions at the Weeraketiya residence, gave rise to the disputed bill.
The Supreme Court allowed the case to proceed, with the petitioner alleging a violation of Fundamental Rights under Article 12(1) of the Constitution.
The petition names the CEB, its Chairman, the Auditor General, former Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera, Mahinda Rajapaksa, Namal Rajapaksa, MP D.V. Chanaka, and others as Respondents.
