Russian Geographical Society’s 180th anniversary

The Centre of the Russian Geographical Society in Sri Lanka yesterday celebrated the Russian Geographical Society’s 180th anniversary at the Colombo Public Library with the presence of Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakodi and Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar, as Chief Guests.

The Russian Geographical Society (RGS), established in 1845, is a learned society dedicated to geographical research and exploration, with a focus on Russia and its surrounding territories. It’s one of the oldest geographical societies in the world, playing a significant role in the country’s history and development. Councillor of the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka and Director of the Russian House in Colombo Maria Popova was also present.

The special occasion featured the planting of 180 plants of various kinds at the Colombo Public Library premises which benefits the library too. A special photo Exhibition on the history of the RGS was also part of the celebration.
