The Government will restart a stalled Rs. 3.38 billion project at the University of Vocational Technology (UoVT) in Ratmalana, Cabinet Spokesperson and Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday. The project will provide a student hostel, workshops and an auditorium.
He was speaking at the media briefing on decisions taken at Monday’s (12) Cabinet meeting. Dr. Jayatissa said the project will be carried out on the university premises under the 2027-2029 medium-term budget framework, at a revised total cost estimate.
The Cabinet first approved the project on 3 January, 2017. It covered a hostel for 600 students, modern engineering workshops and a 300-seat auditorium. It was delayed by changes in planning and procurement, the economic crisis and other factors. In 2022, it was suspended under the Government’s policy of limiting capital expenditure. The shortage of facilities has since created problems for student welfare and educational opportunities.
The Prime Minister, as Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister, presented the proposal.
