Development work on the Ella–Namunukula–Passara road (B/113) under the “Cyclone Ditwah Road Rehabilitation Program” was officially launched on Monday, with authorities expecting the project to ease long-standing transport difficulties faced by residents and tourists.
The project is being implemented by the Road Development Authority (RDA) under the Transport, Highways and Urban Development Ministry at an estimated cost of Rs. 254.65 million.
Under the project, a 3.28-kilometre stretch of the road, which is currently in a severely deteriorated condition, will be fully resurfaced and carpeted. Construction work is scheduled to be completed within six months, with the project expected to conclude by 5 December 2026.
The inauguration ceremony was held near the 10th Pillar Junction under the patronage of Kitnan Selvaraj and Passara Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Roshan Piyasena.
Officials said the upgraded road will improve transport connectivity for tea estate communities in the area while enhancing access to the popular tourist destinations of Namunukula and Ella. The rehabilitation is also expected to support tourism growth in the region, which attracts both domestic and international visitors.
