A group of representatives of the Young South Asian Leaders Initiative (YSALI) visited the Parliament of Sri Lanka on Tuesday. The delegation, comprising 80 young delegates from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, is participating in the Young South Asian Leaders Regional Workshop being held in Colombo from 17-21 August.
During their parliamentary visit, the delegation met with the Speaker of the Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne. Speaker explained the functioning of the Parliament of Sri Lanka as well as the importance of the contribution of the young generation of Sri Lanka towards the current socio-political transformation taking place in the country.
He further stated that the present youth generation, which has emerged through the inheritance of technology, bears a unique responsibility to create a better world, and that these young delegates, as the young community of South Asia, have the responsibility of providing leadership in this regard.
The Speaker also responded to the questions raised by the participating young delegates, while discussions were also held on enhancing regional cooperation within South Asia, building regional diplomatic relations, and promoting social harmony within South Asian countries.
