Renovated Bambalapitiya Railway Station opens for public use

• Upgrade carried out under Clean Sri Lanka programme with Transport Ministry
• Renovation sponsored by the Dawoodi Bohras of Sri Lanka
• PM Amarasuriya calls project an example of civic partnership
• Dawoodi Bohra community has been in Sri Lanka for nearly two centuries

The renovated and upgraded Bambalapitiya Railway Station was formally opened for public use on 10 September, 2026, following the completion of wide-ranging improvements aimed at providing commuters with a cleaner, safer and more comfortable station environment.

The opening took place at the Bambalapitiya Railway Station in the presence of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Transport and Highways Minister 

Bimal Ratnayake, senior officials of Sri Lanka Railways and other Government institutions, together with representatives of the Dawoodi Bohra community.

The project was undertaken under the Government’s Clean Sri Lanka program, in coordination with the Transport, Highways and Urban Development Ministry and Sri Lanka Railways, with the renovation sponsored by the Dawoodi Bohras of Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Dr. Amarasuriya said the initiative reflected the importance of shared responsibility in improving and maintaining public spaces. “A clean Sri Lanka is built through shared responsibility, where communities contribute, the Government facilitates and public institutions maintain with pride. This project is a commendable example of civic partnership and responsible citizenship,” she said.

The initiative also complements the Government’s Clean Sri Lanka and Dream Destination programs, which place emphasis on improving public spaces, strengthening civic responsibility and creating cleaner, safer and more welcoming environments for residents, commuters and visitors.

A representative of the Dawoodi Bohra community said the project reflected the community’s longstanding commitment to Sri Lanka and to public service. “Sri Lanka has been home to the Dawoodi Bohra community for nearly two centuries, and contributing to the wellbeing of the country we call home is central to our values. We are grateful to the Government, Sri Lanka Railways and all authorities whose support made this project possible,” the representative said.

The Dawoodi Bohra community extended its appreciation to the Prime Minister, Transport and Highways Minister, Sri Lanka Railways, the Colombo Municipal Council, law enforcement authorities and other Government and civic institutions whose guidance, coordination and support contributed to the successful completion of the project.

The restoration forms part of the community’s continuing commitment to supporting civic and social initiatives that contribute positively to Sri Lanka and the wellbeing of the wider public.

The Dawoodi Bohras are a Muslim community with members living in more than 40 countries around the world. The community places strong emphasis on faith, education, enterprise, social responsibility and service to the countries and societies in which its members live.

The Dawoodi Bohra community has been part of Sri Lanka’s social and economic fabric for nearly two centuries. Today, approximately 2,500 community members live in the country. Over successive generations, members of the community have contributed to Sri Lanka through business, professional pursuits, community service and civic initiatives.

The community regularly undertakes social and civic initiatives in areas including healthcare, education, environmental responsibility, food and nutrition, public welfare and the improvement of shared community spaces. These efforts reflect the Dawoodi Bohras’ longstanding commitment to contributing positively to Sri Lanka and serving the wider society.
