In a bid to strengthen commerce education and improve access to modern educational resources across the country, the Cabinet of Ministers earlier this week approved the establishment of a network of regional learning centres.

The initiative, proposed by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister, forms part of a broader plan to enhance teacher development, integrate technology into learning, and expand vocational and higher education pathways.

“Under the program, 100 activity-based learning centres are to be developed between 2026 and 2028 at an estimated cost of Rs. 289 million, as a key project under the Public Investment Program,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday.

As an initial phase, he said the Cabinet has approved the establishment and operationalisation of 25 regional centres–one in each district–to ensure countrywide coverage.

“The centres are expected to serve as hubs for resource sharing, technology integration, and skills development tailored to regional economic potential. They will also help address disparities in access to quality education by enabling the efficient use of limited physical and human resources,” he added.

Dr. Jayatissa said the initiative will contribute to the qualitative improvement of commerce education, while equipping students and teachers with skills aligned to evolving industry and labour market demands.
