United National Party (UNP) MP Ravi Karunanayake yesterday launched a scathing attack on two unnamed party members, accusing them of deliberately destabilising the party and sidelining key figures.

Speaking to the media, Karunanayake claimed that these individuals had ‘taken Ranil Wickremesinghe hostage’, using their influence to manipulate internal party affairs while undermining its broader political agenda.

“I am the only member capable of representing the UNP’s programs in Parliament at present,” Karunanayake said, criticising what he called a systematic effort to exclude him from party activities.

He alleged that he was not even informed of party meetings, describing the treatment as akin to being given a ‘step-motherly’ role within the party.

The former Finance Minister warned that the two figures in question were more focused on securing leadership positions—whether as Party Chairman or General Secretary—than on strengthening the UNP. He also hinted at the possibility of a larger conspiracy at play, questioning whether their actions were being orchestrated by outside forces.

Dismissing speculation that he was seeking to join the Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Karunanayake blamed the rumour on the very individuals he accused of sabotage, suggesting they were attempting to tarnish his reputation within the party.
