ROK Navy ship “Kang Gam Chan” calls at Colombo Port

Korea-Sri Lanka cultural exchange event coincides with visit

The ROK Navy ship “Kang Gam Chan”, the 44th Escort Task Group (ETG) arrived at Colombo Port yesterday.

The port call was followed by a reception and was graced by Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Miyon Lee, Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd.) K.P. Aruna Jayasekara, and Commanders of all three armed forces.

The port call of ROKS Kang Gam Chan marked an important landmark given that this is the second visit of a ROK Naval ship within a span of one and a half years since the previous visit in year 2023.

ROKS Kang Gam Chan Commanding Officer and Commander of the 44th ETG Captain Kwon Yong Gu, expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and emphasised the strategic importance of cooperation with Sri Lanka in the region. He also highlighted the significance of the ETG’s mission in promoting maritime security and freedom of navigation in critical waterways.

The ETG has played a key role in ensuring the safety of global shipping lanes, particularly through counter-piracy and maritime security operations. Its presence reflects Korea’s strong commitment to international peacekeeping efforts and maritime cooperation.

Ambassador Miyon Lee introduced the 44th ETG to the Sri Lankan guests and made her remarks on the mission the ROK Navy ship was assigned with and its contribution in upholding international efforts of securing maritime safety in the waters around Gulf of Aden and Gulf of Oman.

Ambassador Miyon Lee also announced that this visit was a great opportunity for Korea to enhance the longstanding bilateral cooperation with Sri Lanka.

In celebration of the visit, the crew of the 44th ETG, in collaboration with the Korean Embassy, hosted a K-culture event featuring a K-food tasting session, a Taekwondo demonstration, and a K-pop performance. These performances were warmly received by the Sri Lankan Navy officers and local guests, enhancing mutual cultural understanding.
