Queen of Cinema Malini Fonseka’s funeral today

The funeral of iconic actress Malini Fonseka will be held today under State honours at Independence Square, Colombo 7.

Widely revered as the ‘Queen of Sri Lankan Cinema,’ Fonseka (78) passed away on Saturday.

Thousands of fans yesterday paid last respects to her both at her residence in Madiwela earlier on and at Tharangani Hall, where the public will have the opportunity to pay their respects until today afternoon.

President Anura Kumara Disanayake was among many political leaders including the Rajapaksas, Ranil Wickremesinghe, artists, and others who paid final respects to her yesterday.

In his reflections, President Disanayake hailed Fonseka as “a revered icon whose contributions profoundly shaped and elevated Sri Lankan cinema.” He emphasised her enduring legacy and expressed his deep sympathies to the wider arts community, noting her influence on generations of performers and filmmakers.
