President meets top officials ahead of UNGA session

President Anura Kumara Disanayake meets Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif 


President Anura Kumara Disanayake, who arrived in the US on Tuesday, met UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, ahead of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). 

The meeting took place at the Human Rights Council Chamber of the UN Secretariat in the US. 

Türk extended a warm welcome to Disanayake and engaged in bilateral discussions, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said in a statement.

The President also met with US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs and White House Presidential Personnel Office Director Sergio Gor in New York.

The meeting took place at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the UN in New York.

Separately, President Disanayake also met his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa.

The meeting took place at the One Plaza in New York.

Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, along with Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representatives to the UN and former Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, PC, were also present at the meetings. 

In addition, the President met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif yesterday.

The two leaders engaged in discussions focused on further strengthening the longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and Pakistan and enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors.

Disanayake is scheduled to address the 80th session of the UNGA. During his visit, the President is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with the UN Secretary-General and several world leaders.

Additionally, he will meet with members of the Sri Lankan community residing in the US.
