President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held a telephone conversation with United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan yesterday, during which he condemned recent Iranian attacks targeting the UAE and several Arab countries.
According to the UAE’s official news agency WAM, President Dissanayake also conveyed Sri Lanka’s support for the UAE in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan thanked President Dissanayake for Sri Lanka’s expression of solidarity and its supportive position.
Both leaders emphasised the need to immediately de-escalate military tensions in order to prevent the conflict from expanding further and to limit potential repercussions for regional and global security.
Commenting separately on the discussion, President Dissanayake said he had conveyed condolences and solidarity to the UAE following the recent attacks.
“I telephoned His Highness @MohamedBinZayed, President of the UAE, to express my sadness over the recent attacks suffered by the UAE. I assured him of Sri Lanka’s solidarity while condemning all forms of violence and terrorism. Sri Lanka stands firmly with the UAE and is ready to assist in any way it can,” he said in a statement posted on the social media platform ‘X.’
The call comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following Iran’s retaliatory strikes on US assets in the region.
