President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday congratulated C. Joseph Vijay following his swearing-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, highlighting the longstanding historical, cultural, and economic ties between Sri Lanka and the Southern Indian State.
In a post on ‘X,’ President Dissanayake said: “Congratulations to Hon. C. Joseph Vijay on being sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
“Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu are connected through history, culture, enterprise, and enduring people-to-people ties across generations. Our future holds immense economic promise and opportunity as Sri Lanka and India continue to build ever closer ties and a stronger partnership. I look forward to working together, within the strong India–Sri Lanka partnership, towards greater prosperity and progress.
“The people of Sri Lanka join me in wishing you and the people of Tamil Nadu every success.”
The President’s message comes amid deepening economic and diplomatic engagement between Sri Lanka and India, with Tamil Nadu remaining a key regional link in trade, investment, tourism, and cultural relations.
In a post on ‘X,’ Premadasa referred to Vijay’s remarks on ushering in an era centred on social justice and secularism, while cautioning against politics driven solely by anger and unresolved grievances.
Premadasa said history had demonstrated that societies built on division tend to become isolated, whereas those grounded in fairness, coexistence, and mutual understanding are more likely to create sustainable futures.
He further observed that across South Asia, people largely aspire to social mobility, justice, and stability irrespective of language, religion or identity, adding that communities share more common interests than differences.
Premadasa also expressed hope that the new political phase in Tamil Nadu would promote progress, compassion, and stronger dialogue, replacing distance and mistrust with greater understanding.
