A vaccination drive for persons over the age of 60 who are yet to receive the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine will be carried out in the Western Province for three days starting tomorrow.

The vaccination drive will also target persons with serious illness and all eligible persons can register by calling 1906.

As of Friday, 100% of the ‘Over-30’ population in the Colombo and Gampaha Districts had received the first dose of a vaccine while 88.4% of the Over-30 population in Kalutara District had received the first dose of a vaccine. The second dose of a vaccine has been administered to 53% in Colombo District, 42.4% in Gampaha District, and 34.8% in Kalutara District.

The first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine has been administered to 94.6% of the country’s Over-30 population and 23.5% have received the second dose as well.

Meanwhile, National Operations Centre for the Prevention of the COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) Head Gen. Shavendra Silva yesterday stated arrangements will be made for a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine if required.

“Some countries have already begun administering the third dose or a booster. This was discussed with the Presidential Task Force on Friday and the President gave clear instructions to apply for them as soon as possible, if persons require booster shots,” Gen. Silva said.
