  • Demands Govt. to reveal all economic decisions to the people
  • Calls on people to voice their dissent against corruption and ill-considered political decisions

Gampaha district MP Nalaka Godahewa says the people must not only raise their voices against corruption but also against ill-considered decisions made by rulers. “From lessons learnt from our history our country’s people must raise their voices against not only fraud and corruption but also imprudent political decisions,” he said.

Godahewa made these comments at a press conference held at the ‘Nidahasa’ - or Freedom office located in Nawala on Thursday.

Godahewa explaining the ‘Nidahasa’ group’s stance on the current crisis said it hopes to become a force that will voice its dissent against corruption and wrong political decisions by the country’s leaders. “Our intention however is not to undermine the Government at this critical juncture,” he added.

According to Godahewa, the situation of the country remains the same despite the crackdown on the Aragalaya. “Around 2500 have been arrested. The activists involved have been temporarily silenced. But this does not mean the issues have been resolved,” he noted.

Pointing out to the recent visit of Samantha Power to Sri Lanka, Godahewa recalled that Power had noted the situation in Sri Lanka is unprecedented and claimed the crisis was caused by undeterred corruption and reckless decisions by rulers.

“This is why we feel it is our responsibility to speak up against wrong decisions by the Government. We expect the Government to publicly declare its plan to recover from this economic crisis. Only then can we make note of any possible dangers and voice our concerns on behalf of the people,” he said.

He called on the Government to be transparent with the people and reveal all relevant information to the public. “They must tell the truth to the people as it is the people that must suffer the consequences in the end. Therefore, we strongly urge the Government to inform the people before taking severe economic decisions,” he said.
