  • Yesterday’s meeting ended inconclusively
  • Another meeting this morning to be followed by Business Com. meeting
  • Opp. seeking early debate on motion expressing displeasure on conduct of President

Party leaders will meet virtually with Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena this morning after yesterday’s meeting ended inconclusively.

The meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. with the Parliament Business Committee scheduled to meet at 11, official sources said.

The meeting was held virtually after some MPs raised concerns over their personal security. Homes and offices of over 30 ruling party MPs have been damaged or burnt by angry crowds in the past two days.

The Opposition is insisting on an early date to debate the motion which expresses displeasure for not having properly exercised, performed, and discharged the powers of the President under the Constitution.

The SJB had handed over a No-Confidence Motion against the President but it was reworded to make it a motion expressing displeasure on his conduct.

The motion has been included in the addendum to the Order Book of Parliament under the category of motions for which no dates have been fixed.

Former Ministers, Dinesh Gunawardena who was the Leader of the House as well as Prasanna Ranatunga who was the Chief Government Whip informed the Speaker that they will not be joining the zoom meeting as they no longer remained in the posts after the Prime Minister’s resignation.

They also requested the Speaker to ensure adequate security is provided to the homes and offices of all MPs.
