A subcommittee has been appointed by the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Environment, Agriculture and Resource Sustainability to investigate the environmental impact linked to the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant and submit recommendations to Parliament.
According to the Department of Communications of Parliament, the subcommittee will be chaired by MP and Attorney-at-Law Bhagya Sri Herath.
The decision was taken during a recent meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee held in Parliament under the chairmanship of MP Hector Appuhamy.
Officials representing the Environment, Power and Energy, and Health and Mass Media Ministries and several other institutions participated in discussions relating to the environmental impact of the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant.
Parliament said the discussions focused on the environmental consequences arising from the plant’s operations, the parties responsible, and whether there had been shortcomings on the part of relevant institutions.
Following the discussions, the Committee decided to appoint a separate subcommittee to conduct further investigations into the matter and provide recommendations.
During the meeting, Appuhamy also said the Committee intends to seek discussions with the German, Japanese, and Chinese Embassies in Sri Lanka, as well as the Indian High Commission, to secure opportunities for officials to participate in training programs relating to new technologies used in power plants in those countries.
