Pakistan dispatched its first disaster-relief aircraft to Sri Lanka last night, delivering emergency supplies and a specialist rescue contingent to support national efforts following the severe weather calamity.

The Pakistan Air Force C-130 touched down at Katunayake Airport at 6:30 p.m.—on board were 47 military personnel trained in search-and-rescue operations and four rescue dogs skilled in locating survivors trapped under debris. The aircraft also carried family tents, blankets, bedding, life jackets, inflatable boats, water-removal pumps, lamps, mats, mosquito nets, infant milk powder, dry rations and medical supplies.

Pakistani High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Major General (Retd.) Faheem Al Aziz received the consignment at the airport, along with officials from the High Commission. Ports and Civil Aviation Deputy Minister Janaka Ruwan Kodithuwakku and other Sri Lankan representatives were also present.

The consignment marks Pakistan’s first tranche of assistance as the country moves to reinforce Sri Lanka’s immediate relief and rescue operations amid rising humanitarian needs.
