Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who also serves as the Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister, recently announced plans to introduce a more effective mechanism for placements and transfers in the Teacher Educators Service and the Education Administrative Service.

Speaking at the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education held on 6 August in Parliament, Dr. Amarasuriya acknowledged longstanding concerns over the current process.

MPs highlighted instances of irregularities, including the recent case in the North Central Province where five out of six newly appointed officers were swiftly transferred again.

The Committee stressed the need to consider both human factors affecting officers and the service requirements when making appointments.

The Prime Minister noted that, until now, no formal system had been in place for placements and transfers in these services, but work is underway to develop a structured plan that balances operational needs with personnel welfare.

In addition, Dr. Amarasuriya directed officials to expedite measures to facilitate the admission of students with disabilities to universities.

The meeting also saw the presentation of progress reports from the six subcommittees operating under the Ministerial Consultative Committee.

A number of MPs as well as officials participated in this Ministerial Consultative Committee.
