PM inaugurates Wayamba University Township Development Project

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa Monday inaugurated the Sri Lanka Wayamba University Township Development Project implemented under the provisions of the Saudi Fund for Development.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who participated in the ceremony at the Wayamba University premises in Kuliyapitiya via video from Temple Trees, unveiled the plaque marking the inauguration of the project.

The project at an estimated cost of $ 28 million is financed by a concessional loan from the Saudi Fund for Development. This project is being implemented focusing on the Kuliyapitiya and Makadura campuses of the Wayamba University.

A sum of Rs. 1.942 billion has been allocated for the Kuliyapitiya premises and Rs. 1.973 billion for the Makadura premises while another Rs. 262 million has been allocated for the purchase of equipment for the existing faculty complex.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the new library building at the Kuliyapitiya campus of the Northwestern University was held today to coincide with the inauguration of the project. The cost of the project is Rs. 259 million.

MPs B.Y.G. Ratnasekera and Samanpriya Herath, Saudi Ambassador to Sri Lanka Abdul Nasser bin Hussain Al-Harthi, Saudi Fund for Development CEO Sultan Bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, and Acting Vice Chancellor of the Wayamba University Dr. Sanjeewa Bowatta, joined in laying the foundation stone.

This project is implemented by the Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education to enhance the quality and relevance of university education in order to produce talented and professionally skilled graduates in line with the socio-economic development of the country.

The Wayamba University Township Development Project is expected to have a significant development impact by enhancing close interaction with the university community and surrounding communities as well as strengthening rural areas.

Minister of Education Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Kapila Perera, University Grants Commission Chairman Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunga, and other Government officials were present at the occasion from Temple Trees.
