PM Dr. Harini appointed Chairperson of Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Sri Lanka National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the Prime Minister’s Media Division announced.

Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa has been named Vice Chairperson of the Commission.

The appointments were formalised during a ceremony held on Tuesday (29) at the Education Ministry in Isurupaya, Battaramulla, with Dr. Amarasuriya in attendance.

According to the statement, the National Commission is tasked with coordinating efforts across key ministries to support UNESCO’s core mandates including education, science, culture, mass communication, social sciences, and environmental initiatives   in alignment with Sri Lanka’s national development goals.

The appointed members of the Commission are:

n Subject matter experts: Dr. Asha de Vos, Chandra Wickramasinghe, Dr. V.V. Madawattegedara, and Saminathan Vimal.

n Secretary General of the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO – Professor Prabath Jayasinghe

n Secretary to the Ministry – Nalaka Rathnayaka

n Other Members: Hemanta Pubudusiri, Shashikala Premawardhana, Samanthi Senanayake, Apsara Caldera, Mohamed Nawaz, R.A.D.S. Ranatunga, W.G. Kumaragama, Sujeewa Palliyaguruge, Deepa Liyanage, H.A.H. Perera, S.S.P. de Alwis, Varuna Sri Dhanapala, W.W.M.P.S.C. Palamkumbura, M.S.L.R.P. Marasinghe, Dr. Nilan Cooray, and Sanuja Kasthuriarachchi.
