Colombo yesterday witnessed a historic cultural achievement as more than 5,000 Bharatanatyam dancers came together at Galle Face Green to set a Guinness World Record for the largest Bharatanatyam dance lesson.

The event was organised by Sangamam Global Academy of India and Samgamizh Liya of Sri Lanka, bringing together participants from Sri Lanka, India, and several other countries in a celebration of classical dance and cultural heritage.

Dressed in traditional attire, thousands of dancers performed synchronised Bharatanatyam movements under the guidance of instructors as part of the official record attempt. Following the performance and adjudication process, the Guinness World Records certificate was formally awarded.

Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha received the certificate on behalf of the performers and organisers.

In a post on 'X,' Jha said he was delighted to participate in the event, describing it as a celebration of the “timeless beauty, grace, and grandeur of Bharatanatyam.”

He also noted that receiving the Guinness World Records certificate on behalf of the students and organisers was a testament to the enduring cultural bonds between Sri Lanka and India.

The event was attended by Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar and Deputy Ministers Sundaralingam Pradeep and Mahinda Jayasinghe, while a large crowd gathered to witness the record-breaking performance.

Organisers said the initiative was aimed at promoting the rich tradition of Bharatanatyam while fostering cultural exchange and strengthening people-to-people ties across borders.
