The Elections Commission announced on Thursday that 425 nominations submitted for the upcoming 2025 Local Government (LG) polls have been rejected.
Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake, addressing the media, stated that the rejections were made in accordance with Section 28 of the Local Authorities Elections Ordinance.
“Nomination papers must be submitted in accordance with Section 28 of the Act. Based on this legal framework, the Nomination Board rejects any application that fails to meet the required criteria,” Ratnayake explained.
He further noted that all rejected candidates or groups are formally notified in writing with reasons for rejection.
For the 2025 LG elections, nominations were accepted for 336 Local Government institutions, with nearly 2,900 groups contesting. Among them, approximately 2,260 represent political parties, while the remainder are independent groups.
