Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday convened a meeting at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament with party leaders and Opposition Members of Parliament to review the potential fallout of the ongoing Middle East conflict on Sri Lanka.
In a statement, Premadasa said the discussion centred on the evolving military situation in the region and its likely implications for Sri Lanka’s economy.
Participants examined the country’s trade exposure, including key imports and exports linked to Iran and other Middle Eastern states, and flagged possible economic risks arising from prolonged instability.
The meeting also focused on the safety and welfare of nearly one million Sri Lankan migrant workers employed across the Middle East, with emphasis placed on measures to ensure their protection.
Premadasa said Opposition representatives underscored the need for the Government to give greater priority to safeguarding economic stability and protecting overseas workers amid escalating regional tensions.
