Opposition leaders yesterday expressed serious concern over the deteriorating security situation in the country.
In this connection a special discussion was held yesterday at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Parliament chaired by the Opposition and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa, together with Opposition Party leaders and MPs.
The meeting was attended by MPs Gayantha Karunatilleka, Sivagnanam Shritharan, Rauff Hakeem, Rishad Bathiudeen, Ravi Karunanayake, Jeewan Thondaman, K. Kader Masthan, Dilith Jayaweera, Dayasiri Jayasekara, J.C. Alawathuwala, Dr. M.L.A.M. Hizbullah, Dr. P. Sathiyalingam, and Nizam Kariapper.
The party leaders pointed out that this situation has affected the lives of the public, and has also created conditions where opposition parliamentarians cannot freely carry out their public services.
The party leaders also met with the Speaker of Parliament yesterday to once again draw his attention to this matter. The MPs emphasised that it should be stressed to the Speaker that he bears the responsibility and accountability to create an environment where MPs of the Opposition can perform their duties freely and independently, both inside and outside Parliament.
The party leaders requested the Speaker to immediately summon the Inspector General of Police and the Director of the Ministers’ Security Division to Parliament to discuss the emerging situations.
