The Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) in a statement expressed profound shock and deep concern over the tragic killing of a legal professional who was a member of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), a member organisation of the OPA.

This deeply distressing incident represents not only a loss to the legal fraternity but also a matter of serious concern for the broader professional community and the rule of law. Legal professionals play a vital role in upholding justice, safeguarding fundamental rights, and maintaining public confidence in the legal system.

At this difficult time, OPA respectfully calls upon the relevant authorities to conduct a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation so that the facts may be established and justice served in accordance with the law. Ensuring the safety and security of professionals who discharge their duties in often challenging circumstances is of paramount importance.

OPA is also concerned about the nature of certain public discussions that have emerged following this tragedy. We urge all stakeholders, including authorities, public representatives, media institutions, and social media users, to act with responsibility and restraint. Public commentary should avoid speculation, unverified claims, or statements that may prejudice investigations or cause additional distress to the bereaved family and the professional community.

In this regard, we respectfully call upon all parties to:

1. Exercise care and responsibility in public communication, honouring both the dignity of the deceased and the integrity of due process.

2. Refrain from disseminating unverified information or engaging in commentary that may undermine the fairness of the investigative process.

3. Allow investigative authorities to carry out their duties independently and based solely on evidence and established legal procedures.

OPA stands in solidarity with the bereaved family, colleagues, and the wider legal community during this difficult time. We reaffirm our commitment to supporting the rule of law, safeguarding the professional community, and promoting a public discourse grounded in respect, responsibility, and justice.
