No bail for Namal in two cases

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser MP Namal Rajapaksa was yesterday further remanded until 6 October by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court in the Krrish deal case filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

Earlier in the day, he was further remanded until 13 October in the separate Airbus deal case, over allegations that he accepted a Rs. 100 million bribe linked to the purchase of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.

Rajapaksa was named the fourth suspect in the Krrish case this week. The case concerns allegations that Rs. 70 million was paid to him on three separate occasions in return for helping expedite the allocation of the Urban Development Authority-owned Transworks Square property in Colombo Fort to Krrish Transworks Colombo Ltd., a unit of the Indian real estate developer, and securing the necessary approvals. Bribery Commission officers recorded a statement from Rajapaksa in remand custody after obtaining the Court’s permission.

Former Krrish Group Executive Director Janaki Siriwardena, who was arrested by CIABOC on 24 September in connection with the alleged payments, has also been remanded until 6 October.

In the Airbus case, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued the remand order after the Court was informed that investigations had been completed and that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and CIABOC would take steps to file indictments.

CIABOC arrested Rajapaksa on 4 September after questioning him for nearly five hours over allegations that he received Rs. 100 million in cash in connection with the acquisition of wide-body Airbus aircraft for the national carrier. The CID and CIABOC have investigated alleged bribery and money laundering offences linked to the transaction. The allegations remain subject to Court proceedings.
