Nishantha Jayaweera sworn in as Member of Parliament

Representing the National People’s Power (NPP), Nishantha Jayaweera yesterday was sworn in as a Member of the 10th Parliament before Speaker of the House Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.

Following the swearing-in before the Speaker, Jayaweera signed the Member Roll in the presence of Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera.

Jayaweera was appointed as a National List Member of Parliament representing the NPP to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former Deputy Minister Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, who had been appointed to the 10th Parliament from the National List.

The Extraordinary Gazette notification was issued by the Election Commission on 7 July and accordingly, Jayaweera took official oaths yesterday as a MP.

Jayaweera, who previously served as a Deputy Commissioner General of the Department of Inland Revenue, has served in various positions in the department for over 25 years. From September to December 2024, he functioned as the Commissioner General of Excise and subsequently held the post of Senior Additional Secretary to the President.

A graduate specialising in Physics from the University of Kelaniya, Jayaweera also holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from the same university, a Postgraduate Degree in Business Administration specialising in Taxation from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology from the University of Kelaniya.

He has also pursued courses in Economics and Taxation in several countries, including India, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Netherlands.
