New Public Security Minister  defends police action

Newly appointed Minister of Public Security Prasanna Ranatunga defended the police action which left one person dead In Rambukkana yesterday saying personnel on duty were forced to take action to stop an attempt to set fire to a fuel bowser but promised a full inquiry would be held into the incident.

“We are bound to safeguard the people of this country . If the bowser had been set on fire the entire Rambukkana town would have been obliterated, “ he said.

Ranatunga said an inquiry has been initiated by the Police Department and requested the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission to also conduct an independent inquiry.
