Nearly 10,000 people affected as Southwest Monsoon brings heavy rains

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) yesterday reported that a total of 9,975 individuals from 2,641 families have been affected by the adverse weather conditions currently gripping the island.

The inclement weather follows the activation of the Southwest Monsoon, which began to roughen up on the evening of last Thursday, leading to widespread rainfall and strong winds across multiple parts of the country.

According to the DMC’s Situation Report updated yesterday, a total of 14 districts in eight provinces have been impacted due to the severe weather. A total of 19 individuals were reported as wounded, while 2,576 houses have been partially destroyed. Already, a total of 35 families and 147 individuals have been relocated to three safety locations. In addition, eight small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) damages were reported, while 11 damages to critical infrastructure were registered.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology issued an advisory for the next 36 hours, noting that showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-Western Provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

“Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the Central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western Provinces and in Hambantota and Trincomalee districts,” it reads.
