The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved a national road safety awareness project titled “Take Care – Surakimu Magathota” (Take Care – Let’s Ensure Road Safety), to be implemented at the school level across the country.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Independent Television Network (ITN) under the supervision of the Mass Media Ministry, aims to curb the rising number of road accidents by instilling safety awareness among schoolchildren.

The program will be rolled out in collaboration with key stakeholders including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education and Vocational Education, Sri Lanka Police, and the Department of Motor Traffic. It will directly engage 50,000 students across 100 educational zones, with 500 students from each zone expected to participate.

School traffic monitoring groups and prefect bodies will play a central role in the campaign, which focuses on making roads safer for all users by promoting responsible behaviour, awareness of traffic rules, and accident prevention.

The proposal to this effect submitted by Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
