The term of office of the National Police Commission is scheduled to expire today, with the commission’s final meeting taking place yesterday.

Despite the expiry of its official term, the current members are expected to continue performing their duties until new appointments are made.

The present commission was appointed on 15 May 2023 and is chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Lalith Ekanayake.

Under constitutional provisions, the President appoints the Chairperson and four members of the National Police Commission based on recommendations made by the Constitutional Council.

The National Police Commission is one of the nine independent commissions established under the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which was passed by Parliament on 31 October 2022.

The commission functions as an independent oversight body with supervisory authority over the Sri Lanka Police and its officers.

The National Police Commission was first established in 2002 under the 17th Amendment to the Constitution.
