Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa has alleged that individuals who speak out against the Government are being subjected to intimidation and pressure, claiming that some have been “driven to suicide.”
Addressing a divisional meeting in Dedigama, Kegalle, on Saturday (18), Rajapaksa claimed that people who make statements against the Government are threatened and pressured during questioning.
“It seems to me that this is the period with the highest number of suicides. Some people who spoke against the Government have been driven to take their own lives. Others are allegedly told during questioning that they too could end up taking their own lives,” he alleged.
Rajapaksa called for investigations into the reported incidents, accusing the Government of using intimidation and suppression against its critics.
During his address, he also criticised the Government’s economic policies, tax measures, its treatment of public servants and investors, and alleged that it had failed to deliver on promises made to the public.
Regarding the ‘Gamin Gamata’ program by the party, he said it was a great opportunity to connect with the people.
“It was a valuable opportunity to engage directly with the people, listen to their concerns and understand their aspirations,” he noted via a post on ‘X.’
