Lawyers aligned with the National People’s Power (NPP) have condemned the fatal shooting of Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his wife, urging authorities to expedite investigations and strengthen action against violent crime.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the NPP Lawyers’ Association expressed sorrow over the deaths, which occurred in a shooting on 13 February. The group described the attack as a grave assault on two citizens and said it highlighted the need to dismantle what it termed a lingering culture of organised violence.
The statement noted that such attacks could target journalists, Police officers, judges, or lawyers, and stressed that safeguarding public security and upholding the rule of law remain core responsibilities of the State.
The lawyers called for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted without delay.
