A decision has been made to pass a resolution in support of Ranil Wickremesinghe to be appointed as the new Prime Minister in the Parliament when it convenes next on 17 May.

The motion states that the support of the majority of the Members of Parliament will be expressed to Ranil Wickremesinghe.

It is reported that lawmakers of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MPs who support the new Government and MPs of several other parties will assist Ranil Wickremesinghe to function in his post as Prime Minister.

10 political parties which withdrew from the Government and now function independently say that they will unconditionally support Prime Minister Wickremesinghe.

MP Weerasumana Weerasinghe, a member of the group, said that they would support the Prime Minister’s program on behalf of the country without obtaining any privileges.

However, the Sri Lanka Freedom party (SLFP) says that a decision regarding the support for the Prime Minister will be taken at the party’s Central Committee meeting.

The main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will not offer any support to Wickremesinghe, the General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara has said. He also said that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will continue to play the role of the Opposition under the leadership of Sajith Premadasa.

He added that Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed as the Prime Minister to protect the Rajapaksa family.
