Pakistani High Commissioner discusses strengthening bilateral relations with Sri Lanka Parliament Speaker
Talks focus on enhancing cooperation in investment, trade, tourism, and education

Urban Development, Construction and Housing Minister Anura Karunathilaka has been elected President of the Sri Lanka-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Association for the Tenth Parliament.

The revival meeting of the Association was held on 5 August at the Parliament premises under the patronage of Parliament Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne. Pakistani High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Major General (Retd.) Faheem-Ul-Aziz attended the event as Guest of Honour.

Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih, several Ministers, Deputy Ministers, MPs, and Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera were also present on this occasion.

At the same meeting, MP Riyas Farook was elected as the Secretary of the Sri Lanka-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Association.

Addressing the gathering, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne highlighted the longstanding relationship between Sri Lanka and Pakistan and noted that cooperation between the two countries extends across trade, education, defence, and people-to-people ties. He expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s continued support to Sri Lanka and emphasised that the revival of the Friendship Association marks an important step towards strengthening this partnership.

Pakistan High Commissioner Major General (Retd.) Faheem-Ul-Aziz congratulated the newly elected office bearers and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations. He noted that reviving the Friendship Association is significant in further deepening cooperation between the two countries and pointed out the potential for expanding tourism, particularly in relation to religious and cultural heritage. He also extended an invitation to the members of the Association to visit Pakistan.

In his remarks, Minister Anura Karunathilaka thanked the members for electing him and stated that the Association would provide a meaningful platform for dialogue, cooperation, and trust-building between the two nations. He also invited all members of the Association to actively contribute to its activities.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Farook extended his gratitude to the Speaker, the High Commissioner, and all members present. He acknowledged Pakistan’s continued support to Sri Lanka and expressed his commitment to work with fellow members to achieve the objectives of the Association.
