SJB MP S.M. Marikkar

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP S.M. Marikkar in parliament yesterday made shocking revelations about a sale of land in Hanthana by the Government.

The MP alleged that a 25 acre plot of land has been sold off for merely Rs. 33 per perch to a private company. Marikkar said the actual commercial value of the land is in fact Rs. 1760 million.

He revealed in Parliament he has all the necessary documentation to prove his allegations. Marikkar also claimed the Government is attempting to sell off yet another 10 Acres in Hanthana with a prominent politician acting as an intermediary in the deal.

The MP also revealed information about a similar deal over a 25-acre plot of land in Imbulgaswadiya, Katana. “They are distributing this now,” he claimed.

Marikkar claimed the purchasers only own half of the land while the rest are bought on behalf of Government Ministers. “They are even being given apartments in return,” he accused.

Marikkar also lambasted   the Government of postponing elections and preventing the appointment of public representatives to carry out corrupt deals such as this. “This is why they say there is no need for elections,” he said.

“We need elections. Only the President’s cinnamon gardens gang, a particular UNP advisor and first-time SLPP MPs do not want elections to be held,” he said.
