.SJB MP S.M Marikkar

  • Calls on Govt. to hold polls without delay allowing demonstration of public sentiment
  • Claims a Govt. elected by people can garner international support and bring in investments
  • Accuses current rulers of failing to identify new sources of income

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP S.M Marikkar yesterday urged the Government to hold elections without delay to provide the public with an outlet to vent their frustrations.

“If the Government wishes to prevent public protests, they should expedite parliamentary elections to alleviate public pressure, allowing for a clear demonstration of public sentiment,” he said.

The MP made these comments while addressing a press conference in Colombo.

He noted that a Government elected by the will of the people can garner international support, and establish new sources of income.

"It is possible to attract new foreign direct investments, and taxes can be reduced after receiving such foreign investments to the country," he added.

Marikkar said the 2024 Budget proposals presented by the President contain only expenditure, and the people have not seen that the country needs income to cover the proposed expenditure. “No method of generating such income is mentioned in the Budget, and no new sources of income have been identified either,” he noted.
