Ven. Eethalawetunuwewe Gnanathilaka Thero
The Malwathu Maha Viharaya Sangha Sabha has decided to suspend the post of Chief Sanghanayaka of Nuwarakalaviya held by Pallegama Hemarathana Thero with immediate effect, pending the outcome of ongoing Court proceedings related to allegations made against him.
According to a statement issued by the Malwathu Maha Viharaya under the signature of its Registrar Dr. Pahamune Sumangala Thero, the Atamasthana Committee on the directives of the Sangha Sabha has decided to appoint Ven. Eethalawetunuwewe Gnanathilaka Thero to temporarily oversee the duties of the Atamasthanadhipathi.
Ven. Gnanathilake Thero is a member of the Committee, the Chief Sanghanayaka of the North Central Province, and the Chief Incumbent of the Ruwanweli Seya.
The Malwathu Maha Viharaya Sangha Sabha looked into the allegations levelled against Pallegama Hemarathana Thero and summoned the relevant parties to inquire into the matter.
The decision follows a Karaka Maha Sangha Sabha meeting summoned on 30 May. Accordingly, this decision will remain in effect until the ongoing legal proceedings regarding the allegations against Pallegama Hemarathana Thero are concluded and a final verdict is reached.
The statement further notes that this decision is being announced on the directives of Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Mahanayake Thero of the Malwathu Chapter.
