Former President  Mahinda Rajapaksa

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is scheduled to appear before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) today (12), according to his media spokesman Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Gamage said Rajapaksa is expected to appear before the Commission at 9 a.m.

According to Gamage, the summons is linked to a statement allegedly provided by former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena.

However, Gamage claimed Chandrasena had subsequently filed an affidavit before court alleging that the statement had been obtained under coercion and threats.

He said Rajapaksa would nevertheless appear before the Commission, but maintained that legal action could follow if authorities relied on what he described as an unlawfully obtained statement.

Gamage further stated that the legal team would continue reviewing the matter, while reiterating that Rajapaksa had decided to cooperate with the inquiry and present himself before the Commission as scheduled.
