Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday signalled a renewed political push by the SLPP, while expressing confidence on a plan to regain power.

Speaking to media after the party’s first meeting following the Sinhala and Tamil New Year at SLPP headquarters, Rajapaksa said the festive season had not been fully felt by many citizens due to economic hardships.

“The New Year was successful for us, but I don’t know how it was for the ruling party. The people did not celebrate the New Year in the true sense, as they are grappled with many issued including high cost of living,” he told journalists.

Rajapaksa also indicated that the SLPP is formulating a broad political strategy aimed at regaining power, though he stopped short of committing to a specific timeline.

“We have a big plan to regain power. Politically, we cannot say there will be a change this year itself, but there will definitely be a change. We are ready,” he added.

Commenting on upcoming political activities, Rajapaksa noted that the May Day falls on a Poya day this year, and therefore the SLPP will refrain from holding its traditional rallies. “Instead, we will conduct a series of religious observances and engage in sil,” he said.
